Union waive four ahead of waiver draft

The Philadelphia Union Monday waived four players ahead of the MLS's waiver draft, in which the Union pick sixth. The players waived were Kleberson, Don Anding, Greg Jordan and Oka Nikolov.

None of the moves come as big surprises. Kleberson's loan deal with Bahia ends prior to the start of next season, and it's likely that no one would take a flyer on him given his high salary. The 34-year-old veteran of two World Cup finals spent most of last season rooted to the bench after a quad injury, making 11 appearances and scoring once.

Jordan has struggled though knee injuries this season. The 32nd pick in the 2012 SuperDraft, the 23-year-old never made a league appearance, shuttling between reserve league and Harrisburg City. Nikolov, the 39-year-old veteran of 20 seasons in Germany's Bundesliga, was signed in August as a back-up goalkeeper. He didn't make a league appearance for the Union.

The only move that is even moderately a surprise is Anding, 22, the 26th overall pick in last year's MLS SuperDraft. He made one league appearance this season and was touted by the Union staff for his athleticism and ability to provide width, but apparently he is not in the long-term plans of the club, which has a bevy of draft picks in this year's SuperDraft. Emblematic of the Union's recent draft-day failures, Anding's dismissal means the only remaining link to the 2013 SuperDraft of just over 10 months ago is supplemental pick Leo Fernandes.

The Union will pick sixth in today's Waiver Wire draft, which will be begin at 3:30.
